SAFFRON
KASHMIR SAFFRON
Kashmiri saffron is a type of saffron that is grown in the Kashmir region of India. It is known for its high quality and strong aroma, and is considered to be one of the best varieties of saffron in the world. Kashmiri saffron has been granted Geographical Indication (GI) status by the Indian government, which means that only saffron grown in the Kashmir region can be sold under the label "Kashmiri saffron."
Non-GI saffron, on the other hand, is saffron that is grown outside of the Kashmir region or does not meet the specific criteria required to be labeled as Kashmiri saffron. Non-GI saffron can come from various regions around the world, including Iran, Spain, and Greece.
GI status is granted to products that have a unique geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are significantly attributed to that origin. The purpose of granting GI status is to protect the products from being falsely labeled and to promote their unique qualities in the market.
In the case of Kashmiri saffron, the GI status ensures that only saffron grown in the Kashmir region can be sold under the label "Kashmiri saffron," which helps to protect the reputation and quality of this highly valued spice.
